About Dr. Ava Muhammad

Dr. Minister Ava Muhammad was a gifted attorney, researcher, and lecturer.

Early Life and Education

Sister Minister Dr. Ava Muhammad was born on November 9th, 1950, to William and Gladys Atkinson in Columbus, Ohio. Raised in a middle-class home by two educator parents, she was influenced by civil rights leaders such as The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture). She pursued higher education at Georgetown University Law Center, earning her Juris Doctorate in 1975.

As a young attorney, she was on the path to a promising legal career, becoming a criminal defense attorney and excelling in her field. However, a life-changing event in 1979—her diagnosis with cancer—marked a spiritual turning point in her journey.

Legal Career and Spiritual Journey

This life-altering moment led her to seek deeper spiritual meaning and guidance.

Initially, she turned to the church of her youth for solace but found that it did not provide the comfort she was seeking. In her search for a greater understanding of life and death, she was drawn to the teachings of The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam. After attending one of his speeches in New York City, she experienced a profound spiritual awakening.

She later described this pivotal moment as a revelation, stating that Minister Farrakhan’s message of self-reliance, faith, and empowerment resonated deeply with her soul. She credited her healing and renewed strength to the spiritual foundation she found in the Nation of Islam, marking the beginning of her transition from a legal professional to a dedicated servant of the faith. She later testified that after embracing the Nation of Islam’s teachings, her cancer disappeared.
